If you had told me even a year ago that I would own a black leather dress, I would have laughed and made a bet with you that pigs would fly past my window before you found one in my wardrobe. But the day has arrived. Have I succumbed to the latest trend? No, it’s just that my tastes have changed so drastically that I now consider black leather to be a fashion staple, and when I saw it, I just had to have it.
Those who have known me personally for any length of time will remember the days when my wardrobe looked like Glinda the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz had personally selected each piece in it.
I remember I had these books filled with pictures that I’d cut out from magazines to use as outfit inspiration. When I flip through those books now, it gives me a true indication of just how much my preferences differ from 16-year-old me. I still love girly things, and pink still features in my wardrobe, but I’d like to think I’ve broadened my horizons.
Case in point: it was my birthday last weekend, and to celebrate I went out to dinner with some close friends. I found two dresses that I was choosing between. Option one was the old me’s fantasy dress. I would have wept over it two years ago, but last week, I chose option 2- a little black leather dress.
At this point in my life, the black leather was a no-brainer for me. I figure it’s more versatile, and at my age (and let’s face it, I’m now half-way to 50) the days have passed when daisies and pastel colours were the main feature in my wardrobe.
It was then I realised I’ve got quite a collection of black leather, from boots to pants and jackets, and the pink portion of my clothing is steadily dwindling. Not only that, my racks boast a whole collection of things I wouldn’t have looked twice at before. Funny how things change, don’t you think?
