Country Girl

When I first arrived on the Gold Coast at the tender age of 14, people would always say to me “you look like such a country girl”. It’s something that I’ve heard a lot over the years, and I’m yet to figure out why I give off this vibe.

I dress similarly to the majority of the population, I eat the same things, do the same things, smell the same (I hope). Perhaps it’s something intangible: my naïveté that I seem to wear like a perfume, my habit of inserting colloquial and old-fashioned phrases into my every day speech or perhaps people are telepathically picking up on my completely random obsession with overalls.

Let’s just say “I got it from my mumma”. My baby albums feature overalls of all shapes and sizes. Denim, corduroy, short leg, full length. Our Santa photos from 1997 feature me in denim overalls with embroidered flowers and a fringe that I am obviously trying to grow out.

My next foray into overalls was in 2007, when they, along with jumpsuits, became ridiculously popular. My friend Lucy and I had matching ones, and I’m embarrassed to say we wore them in public, with matching yellow singlets and sneakers. People must have thought that B1 and B2 were on the loose. Lucy is completely disgusted that those overalls are still sitting in my wardrobe, although they never get worn in public any more.

It’s now 2016, and I felt brave enough to revisit them. This time though I tried for a more sophisticated look, and so far I think it’s my favourite way to wear overalls.

  1. Maybe it’s your fresh face and smile. You look very sweet and people tend to associate that with countryside
