Ladies: can I get a “hell yes!” if you’re one of those girls who sees fashion trends in magazines, label lookbooks, in the streets and online, but it never translates when you try it on yourself? Honestly, it’s the story of my life. I can pinpoint the first time this happened to me. Primary school. Year 5. Every where you looked, girls were wearing rainbow striped knee-high toe socks. You know the ones I’m talking about right? My friends all had them, and tween clothing shops everywhere were stocking up. The girls around town looked like little Rainbow Brights, but when I finally got a pair for my birthday and tried them on, I looked less cute and more like a psychedelic elf.
Fast forward 15 years, and I’m right back where I started, except this time it’s chokers and lingerie dressing that has me stumped.
All these women wearing slip-style dresses, without looking like they’ve stepped out of the house and forgotten to put real clothes on. How do they make it look sexy and stylish and not ridiculous? I have absolutely no idea. What I do know is that every time I read a celebrity interview where they are asked “what is sexy?” the answer is always “confidence is sexy”.
To be perfectly honest, I’m never going to feel confident wearing this sort of dress, so I decided to put my own spin on it. Ditto with the choker. I know I’m several months behind everyone else, but I’d rather work out how to wear one without looking like a total wannabe than to make a fool of myself trying to keep up with what everyone else is doing.
When I found this dress, I thought it was the perfect for me to test the waters with. The lace detail hints at something a little bit daring, but the opaque checked fabric gives the whole thing a preppy element, which puts it right back into my comfort zone.
I’ve learnt over time not to follow the crowds when it comes to trends. They come and go so frequently, and honestly, who wants to look back and remember that they were a perpetrator of the rainbow knee-high sock phase?
