Ballroom dancing has been flirting with the edges of my life for quite some time now. Of course, ballet was always my “thing”, but I suppose it was on my radar because my ballet teacher’s daughter was a keen ballroom dancer.
Then there was the mandatory watching of “Strictly Ballroom” for English in High School (if you aren’t Australian, and you look this up on YouTube, try not to judge Australian culture, accents, or our film industry too harshly).
Fast forward a few years, and my friend Molly dragged me along to a salsa dancing class. Every Wednesday we’d head off to the community hall, where we’d both get in trouble for trying to lead- an occupational hazard when you’ve done full-time ballet and can pick up the choreography faster than your partner.
In the end, I put a stop to those lessons when my partner, who was a literal square and at least a foot taller than me, lent down and whispered in my ear, “You see how I’m holding your hands right now? This is the grip I used to snap people’s bones when I was in prison.” Ummm… ok… cue deep breathing.
Every time I see the little salsa-dancing emoji, it reminds me of those lessons and the laughs we had. I present to you the real-life version of that dress, perfect for dinners, nights out on the town, or a little bit of salsa dancing- whatever strikes your fancy.
